The concept of sustainability is something that is increasingly important to the way that we operate as individuals, as educators and as societies more generally. Originally a term largely used in reference to the wellbeing of the Earth in the face of rapid development, and the threat of environmental degradation, the United Nations Brundland commission posited that “sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”.

This concept of sustainability has since taken root in different professions and academic disciplines, and is now at the heart of how we look at the problems facing the world – from the macro to the micro, to the usage of energy and the emerging new impacts on our environment. IAFOR is an organisation committed to sustainability and environmental conservation through education, and the international, intercultural and interdisciplinary approaches that will encourage the synergies necessary for the creation of new knowledge to help identify, address and tackle these problems.

Sustainability means different things to different people, from engineers to charity workers, architects to product designers, politicians to philosophers, and medical doctors to engineers, and IAFOR conferences offer a great platform for leading scholars and practitioners around the world to exchange the latest research and ideas in their field, and be confronted and challenged by those in others.

The IAFOR platform is one that can only function as a sustainable entity from the active partnership and support of some of the world’s leading universities, such as Virginia Tech, Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern, National Archive of Computerized Data on Aging (NACDA) and Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) at University of Michigan, Duke-NUS Medical School, Singapore, Nihon University, and University of Tokyo.

However, it is the contributions of individual academics from all over the world that make IAFOR work, that help us grow sustainably, preserve the environment, and allow us to play our part in pursuit of the common goal of a sustainable and energy efficient world. We look forward to your continued support, and very active participation.

The IAFOR International Conference on Sustainability, Energy & the Environment – Hawaii (IICSEEHawaii) is a multidisciplinary conference held concurrently with The IAFOR International Conference on Education – Hawaii (IICEHawaii). Keynote, Featured and Spotlight Speakers will provide a variety of perspectives from different academic and professional backgrounds.

Registration for either of these conferences permits attendance in both.

IAFOR membership provides an exceptional opportunity to be a part of a leading global academic organisation, network and platform that is committed to nurturing the very best in interdisciplinary research in the global public interest. Membership is open to all scholars, professionals and policymakers, researchers, or those with a strong professional interest in education.

Reviewing

With thousands of abstracts submitted each year for presentation at our conferences, IAFOR relies on academics around the world to ensure a fair and timely peer review process in keeping with established international norms of double-blind peer review. Our peer review process, which involves both reciprocal review and the use of Review Committees, is overseen by the Conference Programme Committee under the guidance of the International Academic Board.

If you hold a PhD or another terminal degree in your field, are a current or former faculty member and have previous peer review experience, we encourage you to join the IICSEEHawaii Review Committee.

Editing

IAFOR publishes four online, Open Access, editorially independent journals across a variety of disciplines, which are associated with IAFOR’s conferences. IAFOR journals are edited by academics who are experts in their fields, and journal submissions are evaluated by Editorial Board members and peer reviewers across the globe who have the relevant qualifications and expertise.
